A Prominent Patriot in the Shenandoah Valley: Major Isaac Hite Jr. & The American Revolution
As part of its celebration of America's 250th anniversary, Belle Grove Plantation is pleased to debut a new online exhibit--A Prominent Patriot in the Shenandoah Valley: Major Isaac Hite Jr. & The American Revolution.
Join us on Wednesday, October 21 at noon on the lower level of the Belle Grove Manor House at 336 Belle Grove Road, Middletown or on Zoom. This program is free of charge.
Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park Ranger Christopher Mattingly will present on Shenandoah Valley native, Isaac Hite Jr.'s service first in the College Company at the College of William & Mary and then as a Lieutenant in the Continental Army and as aide-de-camp to Brigadier General Peter Muhlenberg. Online exhibit creator, Jess Pritchard-Ritter of For the Love of History, LLC will then show the exhibit and discuss the archival materials that are featured in it.
The American Revolution shaped the lives of Isaac Hite Jr. and his Bowman cousins, and studying this era of history brings new insights about this prominent Frederick County citizen. It also highlights the contradiction of his joining the fight for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness while also holding people in bondage and relying on enslaved labor for his plantation's success.
